The trucking industry is a cornerstone of Arizona’s economy, and with rising demand, now is the perfect time to start your trucking career. Whether you’re new to the field or considering a career change, here’s a high-level guide to becoming a commercial truck driver in Arizona.

1. Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Arizona, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old for in-state driving or 21 to operate commercial vehicles across state lines or transport hazardous materials.
  • Hold a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency (passport, birth certificate, green card, etc.).

2. Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

Before applying for a CDL, you must get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), which allows you to practice driving under supervision. To obtain a CLP, you must:

  • Pass the required written knowledge test.
  • Provide a Medical Examiner’s Certificate from a Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved provider.
  • Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.

3. Pass a DOT Physical Exam & Drug Test

All CDL applicants must pass a DOT physical exam and a drug test to ensure they meet health and safety standards. The DOT physical checks:

  • Vision (20/40 in each eye, with or without correction).
  • Hearing ability (forced whisper test from 5 feet away).
  • Blood pressure, heart health, and diabetes control.
  • Overall physical and mental fitness to operate a commercial vehicle.

4. Enroll in a CDL Training Program

Arizona does not require formal CDL training, but federal regulations require CDL applicants to complete entry-level driver training with a registered driver before testing. Enrolling in a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)-approved truck driving school provides hands-on experience and increases hiring potential. Training includes:

  • Classroom instruction on trucking laws and regulations.
  • Behind-the-wheel training to master road skills and safety.
  • Pre-trip inspections and CDL skills test preparation.

5. Take the CDL Skills Test

After holding your CLP for at least 14 days, you can schedule a CDL skills test at an Arizona MVD-approved testing site. The test includes:

  • Pre-trip inspection – Identifying safety hazards and checking vehicle condition.
  • Basic control skills – Parking, backing up, and making controlled maneuvers.
  • Road test – Operating the vehicle in real-world traffic conditions.

Passing this test earns you a Class A, B, or C CDL, allowing you to drive commercial vehicles.

Some trucking jobs require specialized endorsements to operate certain vehicles or haul specific cargo. Arizona offers endorsements for:

  • T: Double/Triple Trailer
  • P: Passenger
  • N: Tank Vehicle
  • H: Hazardous Materials
  • X: Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials
  • S: School Bus

6. Secure a Trucking Job

Once you have your CDL, you can begin your job search through:

  • Arizona@Work (arizonaatwork.com) – A state-supported employment resource.
  • Company-sponsored training programs – Some companies provide paid CDL training with guaranteed job placement.

To improve your chances of getting hired, make sure you have:

  • A clean driving record
  • A well-prepared resume highlighting your training and endorsements
